Rosses Martyrs Book Launch

Rosses Martyrs Book Launch

Abhaile Arís, the republican ex-prisoner group, based in Letterkenny will officially launch the booklet “The Rosses Martyrs” on Thursday, 20th April 2006, in Ostan na Rossan, Dungloe at 8:00pm.
The Abhaile Arís Irish History Group, which comprises members of the republican ex-prisoner community, adopted the idea of producing the booklet as a social economy project which it hopes will produce a series of such booklets detailing the history of the republican struggle from a Donegal perspective.
I would like to thank the history group for the effort that they have put in to researching and documenting the extraordinary lives of these four young people and producing a publication, which will be an invaluable tool in educating young people, and raising their awareness of that period.

2003/2004

Abhaile Arís applied for and received funding from the Northern Ireland Voluntary Trust (now the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland) to host a one day seminar on Racism, Sectarianism and Intolerance in April 2003. This attracted about 70 representatives from Abhaile Arís, the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism and the Traveller, Unionist and Refugee communities. The seminar was organised mainly by younger members of the target group, helped by staff members, particularly the outreach worker. Abhaile Arís was very encouraged by the success of the event and by the large number of young people attending.

The project has contributed both locally and nationally to the Process of Nation Building (PNB) project, which is run and maintained by republican ex-prisoners. Staff members, particularly the outreach worker, attend monthly meetings of the PNB committee. PNB seeks to explore future visions of society in Ireland through an interactive programme of research, engagement, outreach and articulation designed by the republican ex-prisoner community.

Members of the management committee, staff and target group also arranged to provide holidays in Co Donegal for children from Holy Cross Primary School in Belfast, who had suffered terrible trauma from the daily protests as they attempted to get to school. A large number of children travelled to Donegal to benefit from this project, which received widespread support throughout the community.
