Abhaile Arís and An Grianan Theatre showing of ‘Hidden Strengths’ hailed as a great success

Abhaile Arís outreach worker, Gerry McMonagle has said that the Letterkenny showing of ‘Hidden Strengths’ was a great success.

Mr McMonagle said;

‘Hidden Strengths’ was shown in An Grianan Theatre on Sunday in conjunction with Abhaile Arís. The play is written and performed by the women of Tar Anall, a Belfast based group for families of former prisoners of the conflict in the north. The 50+ group dramatised the stories of how they and their families experienced the conflict.

“Throughout the war these women, in many ways, became the backbone of the struggle against oppression.

“Their stories tell of bleak moments, deaths, imprisonments, poverty and homelessness but also of the friendships and the trust that developed during those hard times. Of course it also brings to life, the craic they had which always managed to bring a smile to their faces.

“They also told what life is like today for them surviving as an older person, the feelings of being invisible and on the sidelines.

“Abhaile Arís was delighted to bring the play to Letterkenny as it provided a unique insight into the conflict and the affects it had on ordinary people. Such an insight is essential in promoting understanding and building peace in this country.

“The project was funded by Peace 111 - European Union European Regional Development Fund – Investing in your future."
