Abhaile Arís and Loyalist HUBB Outreach meeting

The Abhaile Arís youth groups recently travelled to Belfast for another engagement with The HUBB. The event was part of an ongoing cultural understanding programme between the republican and loyalist groups which is being facilitated by Concensus.

The delegation met with the young loyalists in their North Belfast office early on Saturday to discuss the plan for the day and how it would help fulfil aims and objectives of the programme. It was agreed that both groups would like to learn more about their respective backgrounds and the history of their communities.

The groups then travelled to the Somme Heritage Centre in Newtownards where they explored their shared history and learned of the huge sacrifice made by both Irish Catholics and Protestants during the First World War.

A bus tour of north Belfast then followed and the groups discussed the social aspects of north Belfast and how it compared to Donegal.

As the day drew to a close it was agreed that a residential weekend should take place which will include an examination of republican and loyalist history and how we can work together for peace and understanding between our communities.
